In our busy lives, it’s easy to lose touch with our emotions. With one simple tool however, there is a way to have better self-awareness, emotional regulation and better relationships. What is that tool?  A monthly self-audit.  This practice involves pausing each month to reflect on our emotional experiences, identify patterns, and set intentions for the future.

Steps to Conduct a Monthly Self-Audit

1. Put the Audit on Your Calendar

 Choose a specific day and time each month for your self-audit in a quiet, distraction-free space.

2. Reflect on the Past Month

 Review significant emotional experiences, noting how you felt, what triggered these emotions, and how you responded. Journaling can be helpful for capturing your thoughts.

3. Identify Patterns and Triggers

 Look for recurring themes or triggers in your emotional responses. Understanding these patterns helps you manage your emotions better.

4. Assess Your Responses

  Evaluate how you handled your emotions. Consider if your coping strategies were effective and identify areas for improvement.

5. Set Intentions and Goals

 Based on your reflections, set clear, achievable goals for the next month. These might include practicing mindfulness, developing healthier coping mechanisms, or engaging in activities that bring you joy.

6. Track Your Progress

 Document significant emotional experiences and your responses throughout the month to make your next self-audit more insightful.

Here are a couple other notes to keep in mind when you do your monthly self-assessment:

  • Be Honest and Compassionate: Honesty is crucial, but be kind to yourself. Emotional growth is a journey, and setbacks are normal.
  • Stay Consistent: Make the self-audit a regular part of your routine to see its benefits.  Schedule out 6 months’ worth on your calendar.
