Have you ever found yourself right in the middle of your performance and realized ooof I should have taken some time to get myself locked in. The problem was you did not even know that you needed to get aligned and focused. It has happened to me in meetings and sales calls. Navigating our emotional state, energy levels, and confidence often does not come to the top of our minds prior to performances, and it is crucial.

A quick effective and simple way to assess these aspects of ourselves is by thinking about a traffic light. Just as traffic lights guide drivers, this method can help us understand and manage our inner world. Think about a traffic light what does each color mean to us in our preparation for success?

  1. Green Light: Go!
  • Emotional State: You feel positive, calm, and balanced. Your emotions are stable, and you’re able to handle stress with ease.
  • Energy Levels: High energy, feeling invigorated and motivated. You’re physically and mentally alert, ready to tackle tasks and challenges. Your energy matches what the tasks require.
  • Confidence: Strong self-belief, assured in your abilities and decisions. You feel capable and optimistic about achieving your goals.

  1. Yellow Light: Caution/Slow Down
  • Emotional State: Mixed emotions, possibly feeling anxious, uncertain, or slightly stressed. There might be a sense of unease or irritation.
  • Energy Levels: Moderate energy, potentially feeling tired or lethargic at times. You may need to take breaks and pace yourself. You sense your energy is not quite where it needs to be for the task at hand but also not that far off.
  • Confidence: Fluctuating confidence, moments of self-doubt or hesitation. You might question your abilities or feel uncertain about the next steps.

  1. Red Light: Stop
  • Emotional State: Negative emotions dominate, such as sadness, anger, overwhelm or frustration. You might feel emotionally drained or on the brink of burnout.
  • Energy Levels: Low energy, exhaustion, and difficulty focusing. It’s hard to find motivation or the physical strength to complete tasks. You are nowhere near where you need to be to execute the tasks at hand
  • Confidence: Low self-belief, feeling insecure and doubtful about your capabilities. You may feel stuck or unable to make decisions.

As you get more and more comfortable using the traffic light system there are some key factors to make it work at its most effective. Here are some key tips and tools:

  1. Daily Check-In
Take a few moments each day to identify your “light” color. Ask yourself:
  • How am I feeling emotionally?
  • What is my current energy level?
  • How confident do I feel right now? Reflecting on these questions helps you gauge where you stand and what you might need to adjust.

  1. Actions Based on The Light Color – once you know you color then you need to act on them appropriately.
  • Green Light: Keep going! Leverage your positive state to accomplish tasks and pursue goals. Engage in activities that sustain your energy and confidence.
  • Yellow Light: Proceed with caution. Identify what’s causing mixed emotions or moderate energy. Take breaks, practice self-care, and seek support if needed. Small adjustments can help prevent a shift to red.
  • Red Light: Stop and reassess. Prioritize self-care and rest. It’s crucial to address the underlying causes of your negative state. Seek help from friends, family, or professionals if necessary.

  1. Track Patterns – a great way to grow is to know what triggers are and what things effect your lights. So keep a journal of your daily assessments which can help you identify patterns. You’ll notice what triggers each state and can proactively manage your activities and mindset to maintain a green light more often.

  1. Set Intentions
Use your assessments to set daily or weekly intentions. If you’re in a yellow light, you might focus on activities that recharge your energy. In a red light, your goal might be rest and recovery.

Using the traffic light analogy is an effective way to monitor and manage your emotional state, energy levels, and confidence. By regularly checking in with yourself, adjusting your actions based on your “light,” and tracking patterns, you can enhance your self-awareness and well-being. Embrace this simple yet powerful tool to navigate your inner world with clarity and confidence.
